NBA - Give Everything - Dennis Rodman Canvas Art by IKONICK
There are those who play the game, and then there are those who give everything to the game.
Dennis Rodman falls into the second camp.
This image of his commitment in action has been immortalized in one of the most iconic photographs of all time.
His complete disregard for his own body on the court marked the physicality of his play style. If he was within reach of the basketball, he would get to it—no matter who or what was in the way. If you were a ref, a cameraman on the sideline, or a spectator in the first row, you were collateral damage.
That passion resulted in plenty of fouls (and a few ejections) but it also led to Rodman becoming one of the greatest and most consistent rebounders and defenders in NBA history. Watch his highlight clips on YouTube and it becomes obvious how hard he played. No one wanted the ball more than him, and he wasn't afraid to sacrifice his body to get to it. In his mind, the opponent never had possession—they were just holding onto the ball for him. They might not have known where he was coming from, but they knew the ball was never safe with him on the court.
That mindset led to some of the most acrobatic plays ever seen on the hardwood. Rodman's flying dives and saving throws became as much a trademark as his brightly dyed hair and piercings.
In 1997 one photographer found himself in a position to capture Rodman's arial magic. The Bulls were playing the Golden State Warriors and a rogue ball led Rodman to do what he did best. Trading his wellbeing for possession, number 91 laid out head-first, grabbing the ball with both hands as he soared into the first row. The camera snapped and history was captured.
Dennis Rodman gave everything he had to basketball because basketball was all he had. From humble beginnings and a traumatic childhood to a superstar living in the limelight, the game saved his life and gave him an outlet to freely be himself. For his entire career he was committed to paying the sport back, both physically and mentally. Let this piece instill the same commitment in you.
"Give Everything" from the officially licensed NBA Legends canvas art collection visualizes the devotion that is required for success. If you truly want something out of life, you have to give everything you have to achieve it. There is no sacrifice too great for your true calling. Push through the difficulties, and play for the love of the game.
