Happiness Comes In Waves Motivational Canvas Art by IKONICK
When you think of happiness, do you think of a single blissful moment—or a life-long condition?
Sorry to say it, but there is no such thing as permanent happiness. Not exactly. No one thing or experience can provide enough to sustain you indefinitely. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy life-long happiness.
It takes a conscious decision to seek it out. Learn to see it in all its forms. When you can recognize them when they come, you will expand the joy you derive from every moment.
Psychologists have found humans experience happiness in three waves: Anticipatory, momentary, and afterglow. Their names say it all. We're either looking forward to something, enjoying it at the moment, or remembering it fondly. That’s just as true for material things as it is from experiences.
Think about going to a concert. (Remember those?) In the weeks leading up to the show, your anticipatory happiness builds by the day. You listen to the artist on repeat, think about what songs you hope they play and plan out the whole night. Hopefully, the momentary happiness lives up to the expectations come showtime. And if it was a fun night overall, the memories will create an afterglow you can look back on and enjoy for years.
The artist might only be on stage for 90 minutes, but the happiness born from that experience spans from buying tickets months in advance to reminiscing about it years afterward.
Use that knowledge to your advantage. Hack your own happiness. Set a goal to continually plan things you can look forward to, and you will constantly enjoy that anticipatory excitement. Learn to appreciate the present, and you will derive greater momentary happiness from every day. Practice gratitude for the good times that have passed, and you will always live in the afterglow.
"Happiness Comes in Waves'' officially licensed Smiley canvas wall art illustrates the trinity of being happy. Look at it each morning and condition your mind to pick up on all three waves when they come. When you can elicit joy from something before, during, and after the fact, you turn blissful moments into a lifetime of happiness.
