"PEANUTS - Be The Leader" Canvas Art by IKONICK
On May 13, 1974, Snoopy joined the Beagle Scouts at the lowly rank of “Tenderpaw.” That day Charles Schultz's beloved Peanuts comic strip showed Charlie Brown's dog vowing to work and work, earning “merit badges and things,” until he reached the top, becoming a full-on Beagle Scout. Soon enough his trusty and seldom-spoken sidekick Woodstock joined Snoopy's newly created troop, along with his bird friends: Fred, Roy, Wilson, Conrad, Oliver, Harriet, Bill, and Raymond.
Together they would set out, going on adventurous hikes, watching birds, taking photos, and camping under the stars. However, as Schultz's side-story went on, it became obvious that Snoopy wasn't the best-suited dog to lead this band of birds. In fact, on his very first hike, he found himself lost in the woods—not especially surprising when you consider Snoopy thought the "N" on his compass was short for "Nowhere" instead of "North."Snoopy always had a relaxed attitude about getting to where he was going. When embarking with his Beagle Scouts on a photo hike to Point Lobos, he simply stated "If it's there when we get there, we'll know we're there."
With a scout leader like Snoopy, oftentimes Woodstock and the Beagle Scouts had to follow their own direction. For example, on one particular hike, the scouts left Snoopy behind to go drink root beer at a disco called The Birdbath. In another comic strip, airing April 4, 1990, with the same log-crossing image as this piece, Snoopy tells the Beagle Scouts, "The secret to crossing a log like this is not to look down...just look up.." Bill, bringing up the rear of the troop, takes that advice literally and walks straight up a branch towards the sky. The lesson learned from Snoopy and the Beagle Scouts is that you must be the kind of leader that you yourself would follow. If you are part of a team or organization led by someone that leads you astray, branch out—find your own path. The only way to guarantee you're following the right leader is to be that leader and follow your own compass. Hang this new addition from the officially licensed Peanuts Collection in your home or office to remind yourself of that lesson every day.
